Sacramento has over 200 parks run by the city. These include everything from small, quiet neighborhood parks to large, bustling community and regional parks. We’ve selected a few of our favorites to include in this article. All of the parks listed below are a short distance from Inn & Spa at Parkside, and all are definitely worth taking time to visit.
William Land Park, sometimes called the "Jewel of Sacramento," is a 160-acre park just a short distance from Inn & Spa at Parkside. William Land Park is the largest park in Sacramento, and it includes a number of Sacramento's most popular attractions. Sacramento Zoo, Funderland, and Fairytale Land are all within William Land Park. A nine-hole golf course and the Historic City Cemetery are also part of the park.
One of the more interesting features of William Land Park is the trail system that winds through the park. For example, William Land Park Loop is an easy hike that passes by scenic rock gardens and ponds. Land Park Small Loop is a great hike that runs through grassy fields in the north part of the park.
Originally built by the Sacramento Street Railway Company in the late 1800s, McKinley Park is one of Sacramento's largest and most popular parks. The park covers over 32 acres and has a variety of recreational sites. You'll find baseball fields, soccer fields, basketball courts, and tennis courts. Lake Keisel is also part of McKinley park, along with the ducks, geese, and turtles that inhabit the lake. One of the main attractions of the park is the 1.5-acre rose garden. It features over 1,000 rose bushes, blooming annuals, and rose trees. It's a great place for a wedding or for just visiting.
California State Capitol Park was originally designed in the late 1800s. The park is included on the National Register of Historic Places. It covers around 40 acres, with over 860 trees, and 210 species. Some of the trees date back to the 1870s. California State Capitol Park has a number of memorials, including the 1902 Civil War Memorial, the California Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the California Veterans Memorial. California State Capitol Park also has an excellent, and very popular, trail: the Capitol Park Loop Trail. The trail is a 1.1 mile loop that passes by colorful wildflowers and, of course, a variety of trees. At California State Capitol Park, you'll have plenty of room to have a picnic, play with a pet, or simply spend a while relaxing.
Old Sacramento State Historic Park, located in downtown Sacramento, is know for its Gold-Rush era commercial building. The area still maintains its Gold Rus atmosphere, and it makes a great place to take an evening stroll or just relax and enjoy the surroundings. You can visit the 1849 Eagle Theater, the 1855 Big Four Building, and the 1853 B. F. Hastings Building. The B. F. Hastings Building contains the Old Sacramento Visitor Center and the Wells Fargo History Museum.
