Located in William Land Park, The Sacramento Zoo covers over 14 acres and has around 500 animals on site. Close to 140 of the animals are rare or endangered species. The zoo has been in existence since 1927, when it opened with just 40 animals. Today, it is well known for its many species of rare and unusual animals.
The Sacramento Zoo houses almost 500 animals and 125 different species. Mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish are all represented.
Mammals include primates, felines, ungulates, and more. You’ll be able to view rare species, such as a snow leopard and a red panda. You’ll definitely want to spend a while watching the meerkats and North American river otters. Both species can be highly entertaining.
The Sacramento Zoo has numerous species of birds to watch and enjoy. Relatively common birds, such as the American white pelican and greater roadrunner, and unusual birds, like the laughing kookaburra are on display in natural habitats.
One of the most popular groups of animals at the zoo are the reptiles. This group includes a variety of lizards, turtles, snakes, alligators, and caimans. In this group, you’ll want to make a point of viewing the green tree python because of it’s beautiful coloring. You’ll also want to check out the American alligators and smooth-fronted caimans, because, well, they’re alligators and caimans.
Amphibians and fish are also well represented at the zoo. You’ll be able to see unusual species, such as the axolotl, the poison dart frog, and the green mantella.
The Sacramento Zoo has a wide variety of sites and activities for you to enjoy, including animal exhibits, rides, and encounters with giraffes.
Animal exhibits allow you to get up close to the zoo's inhabitants. For example, you can wander through the Reptile House, with its dozens of reptiles and amphibians. Or, you can spend a while watching the zoo's lemurs interacting with each other.
The zoo has a number of entertaining rides for you to enjoy. The Serengeti Cyclone, the Zoo Train, and the Conservation Carousel are all a blast and cheap! (Only $3.00 per ride).
The Giraffe Encounters attraction gives you the opportunity to interact with the many giraffes at the zoo. You'll be able to feed them and to get your picture taken with them. Note that this attraction is outside and weather dependent.
The Sacramento Zoo gives you plenty of opportunities to shop for gifts and snacks. The Zoofari Market Gift Store has a wide selection of gifts appropriate for kids and adults. If you work up an appetite, you can stop by the Kampala Cafe and choose from burgers, pizza, and other meals. Or, try Savannah Snacks, where you’ll find ice cream, beverages, and a variety of snacks.
The Sacramento Zoo has a number of educational programs and classes available to the general public. You can take behind-the-scenes guided tours of the zoo. (These tours are free if you become a Sacramento Zoo member.) Kids can take part in scheduled field trips or group visits that do not involve an educational organization. One-day classes are also offered by grade level for kids. In addition, the zoo will allow families or friends to schedule an overnight safari on zoo grounds, giving you the opportunity to watch how the animals behave in a very different setting than what would normally be available.
