The California Automobile Museum is a non-profit organization that uses exhibits and events to tell the story of the automobile's influence in American society. The museum has over 120 automobiles on display in it's 72,000 square feet of space. About 60% of the automobiles are loaned to the museum by private exhibitors; the rest are owned by the California Vehicle Foundation. Displays at the museum are arranged in chronological order. The overall collection is an excellent representation of automobiles driven in California over time. The museum also has rotating exhibits that change three or four times a year.
Admission is $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for kids. Your admission includes a personal tour with a staff member who will be glad to answer any questions you have. Group tours and classes (such as a Model T driving class) are available. The museum also has a gift shop and an area for enjoying lunch.
The California State Railroad Museum, located in Old Sacramento State Historic Park, functions as a tribute to the railroad's part in connecting California and the rest of the United States. The primary feature of the museum is its accurately restored locomotives and railroad cars. A variety of steam locomotives and diesel locomotives are on display. The museum also has a number of other exhibits that change on a regular basis. Most of the exhibits explain how the rairoads have affected the people and places of California. In addition, from April until September, you can enjoy an excursion train ride any weekend. Each ride is 45 minutes long. You can also visit the onsite museum store and the museum's library, with a relaxing reading room. Admission to the California State Railroad Museum is $12 for adults and $6 for kids. Most exhibits are fully accessible.
The California State Capitol Museum is part of the California State Capitol. The museum is located in the basement an first floor of the Capitol building. The basement has a theater, gift shop, and History of California mural. The first floor contanins exhibits and the historic offices of California state officials. You can also view artwork created by legislators and government staff memberrs. Technicaly, the rest of the Californa State Capitol can be considered a "living" part of the museum, as well. Surrounding the Capitol is Capitol Park. The park has a variety of gardens, trees from around the world, and numerous memorials related to California's past. If you do visit Capitol Park, make sure not to miss the International World Peace Rose Garden. Admission to the California State Capitol Museum is free.
The California State Indian Museum has been in existence since 1940. It cover three themes of California Indian life: spirit, nature, and family. The museum has numerous artifacts and photographs depicting California Indian tribes. Many of the items have been donated by Native Americans. There are a number of excellent exhibits at the museum, and there is also a hands-on area where you can learn to use Indian tools, such as a mortar and pestle and a pump drill. Admission to the museum is $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for kids.
